GoodNotes vs Notability for digital planning
Both apps import hyperlinked planner PDFs flawlessly — the choice comes down to how you move around a 400-page document and how you like to write. Here's the honest comparison from a planning-first perspective.
Link handling: the planner-specific difference
Notability opens internal PDF links with a single tap in normal view — plan, tap, jump, write. GoodNotes defaults to tap-and-hold → "Open link", or you switch to its dedicated hyperlink tool for one-tap navigation (this is the mode serious planner users live in). Both work; Notability is marginally faster out of the box, GoodNotes gives you an explicit mode so links never fire by accident mid-writing.
Navigation around big documents
GoodNotes' thumbnail sidebar is genuinely good for planners: swipe out, see twelve months of pages, jump anywhere. Notability's page navigator works but is more list-like. Add PDF bookmarks — both apps surface the planner's own table of bookmarks — and the gap narrows. A well-linked planner makes this nearly moot: the tab rail does the navigating for you.
Writing feel
GoodNotes' ink engine leans pencil-like; Notability leans pen-like with pressure variation. On paper-like screen protectors both feel excellent. If you write a lot of long-form notes alongside planning, Notability's audio-linked notes are a real differentiator; if you annotate documents heavily, GoodNotes' tighter zoom and shape tools win.
Organization
GoodNotes nests folders — one folder per year, planners inside. Notability organizes by dividers/subjects, which also works fine for a year-per-planner approach. Neither will make you reorganize your life.
Price and platform (late 2026)
Both have moved to subscription or one-time unlocks; both run on iPad + iPhone + Mac. Neither locks your planner PDF — it's a standard file you can move to Noteshelf, Noteful or Xodo anytime. The planner outlives the app.
Verdict
- You bounce between many pages fast and want one-tap links without modes → Notability.
- You want deliberate navigation, thumbnail browsing, and a pencil feel → GoodNotes.
- Whichever you pick, use a planner that works in both — never let the app choice lock your files.
